MERINDA DAVIES
MIAMI/MIAMI: PLEASURE EMPORIUM
6-21 November, 2021
In 2020 our international exchange MIAMI/MIAMI entered its fifth year with artist MERINDA DAVIES set to travel to Miami in Florida to undertake research and to develop new work for an exhibition at THE WALLS but the pandemic put those plans on hold. With the ongoing international travel ban and the impending closure of THE WALLS this iteration of MIAMI/MIAMI will take form as a creative development. MERINDA will travel to Miami (FL) when the world permits and the project will eventually be presented beyond THE WALLS, offsite and online.
Through conversations, recordings and observations Merinda Davies will explore landscapes of shame, pleasure and the parallel experiences in Miami, Gold Coast and in Miami, Florida. In November Merinda will be in residency at The Walls where she will open the space for a dialogue on pleasure, she will travel to Miami Florida to finalise the work once overseas travel is allowed again.
ROOM SHEET including LAST SUPPER menu.
LAST SUNDAYS/LAST SUPPER was a performance, an installation, a conversation, a shared meal. A reminder of what it means to be touched, to touch, to taste, to be tasted, to breathe in citrus, salt, bitter, butter, burnt caramel, pure umami. Epicurus said “…at the root of every good is the pleasure of the stomach. Even wisdom and culture must be referred to this.”
MERINDA uses performance, movement, installation and conversation to ask how we might reorient ourselves towards deeper care and intimacy. Her work is inspired by the environment, human and more-than-human social and ecological structures and the possibilities available to us in future imaginings. Her practice aims to find clarity and connection in the external world through deep listening, observation, and research into the emotional and physical states in our internal worlds. She grew up in Bundjalung Country, Northern NSW, and is currently living and creating on the land of the Yugambeh language group, in South East QLD.
