LOCAL AIR (ARTIST IN RESIDENCE)
Open to emerging artists living and working on the Gold Coast and surrounds, or with connections to our regional landscape. The successful artist/s (single artist or cosy collaboration only – it’s a small space) will be granted exclusive use of the mezzanine studio space for three months from June-August 2021, an artist fee to develop new work for an exhibition in September 2021, and professional mentoring along the way. Unreal banana peel!

STUDIOS AT ORMEAU AND ELANORA
Snag a space! We’ve got a couple of shared (2 artists per site), prepaid studio spaces up for grabs in Elanora and Ormeau for 3 months from November 2020.

STUDIO O (ORMEAU): Wet area, sink, free wifi, free parking on site at the back door, courtyard, rollerdoor, direct access to toilets and kitchen, adjacent to amenities and M1 exit. What more do you want?

STUDIO E (ELANORA): Carpeted studio; suitable for a designer, artist working with dry media, video, new media, or creative business looking for a leg-up. Amenities TBC. Hurry apply now, limited offer.

EXHIBITIONS: SOLO AND GROUP
Open to artists everywhere, however given the ongoing Covid-19 situation we are focused on seeking applications from artists who are situated in South East Queensland and the Northern New South Wales bubble only. Also due to Covid we have limited slots available with some shows from 2020 rolling into 2021 (in other words we apologise in advance for what will probably be a pretty competitive process). Exhibitions run for 2 weeks and include a generous lead-in period for the installation of experimental work. Oh and we’ll pay you to make and show stuff.

CURATOR, RADIUS: NEW ART FROM THE REGION
Taking place in April 2021 RADIUS: NEW ART FROM THE REGION highlights new work by artists working within a geographical radius of THE WALLS spanning South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. We’re seeking an emerging curator to develop and present our 2021 exhibition. Apply now before it’s too late.

SUMMER RETREAT 2020-21
Last year’s RETREAT artists are still raving about this program! We’re looking for upto 4 local artists to participate in our 8 week shared studio residency at THE WALLS from 1 December 2020 – 31 January 2021. With the rent paid, aircon, wifi, professional development program and an artist fee, this opportunity is going to break the internet. Open to emerging artists living and working on the Gold Coast and surrounds, or with connections to our regional landscape.

MEDIUM RARE
MEDIUM RARE will highlight the practices of artists working with materials in new and experimental ways. Successful artists will share the outcomes of their creative development somewhere in our neighbourhood in Miami. Send us your idea, tell us how it will be shown and shared, and when and where you imagine presenting the work. Well done 🙂

THE SPACE
The main art space in Miami is approximately 70sq metres with 3meter high white walls (walls are backed with form ply for heavy hangs), concrete floors and fluorescent lights. We have a small array of media and tech plus install equipment you can make use of. We can also provide install and curatorial support if requested.

FOR APPLICATIONS VIA EMAIL: mail@thewalls.org.au, please send the following: Name / Address / Phone / Email. Are you a Gold Coast resident? Y / N. Website and social links. If you don’t have a website please attach a folio of upto 10 images of your work. Max. 2 page CV. Opportunity you are applying for. Please upload a project proposal (no more than 1 A4 page) outlining your main artform/ aims/ objectives/ project/ proposal/ how many artists are involved with your project. Unless specififed in the OPEN CALL please nominate a first and second preference for the month in which your project would take place. For proposals for EXHIBITIONS and MEDIUM RARE please tell us your first and second preference for the month in which your project would take place. 1 high res image including image credit (Title, year, photographer) that best represents your work.

FOR ALL APPLICATIONS:
~ All successful artists and curators from the OPEN CALL will be paid with the exception of artists selected for the O and E studios
~ THE O and E studios will be made available at not cost to the selected artists from November 2020 – January 2021
~ The O, E and MEZZANINE STUDIOS are for artmaking only and are not a live-in studios. There may be some restrictions on what kinds of materials/tools can be used in the studio. If you are unsure please email us ahead of your submission.
~ All studio applicants are expected to commit to 15 hours per week working in the studio
~ All successful artists must have current professional insurance
~ There are no age restrictions for OPEN CALL as long as you’re over 18
~ You will be required to discuss and make plans with THE WALLS and report on your activity
~ You will agree to enter into a contract with THE WALLS
