How does the body mark place? And how does place mark the body?
‘Actions Unmarked’ starts with the movement and placement of the body in the immediate environment, allowing for interpretation and ideas to ensue after the (f)act.
The artists’ actions read the wind and the waves, recalling pages of information as though they were scrunched up inside her body, urging to be thrown up, unfolded and read to the world.
Lowana’s process whilst Winter Artist in Residence in THE WALLS’ Mezzanine Studio has spawned an appreciation for healing through action and a tuning in to rhythms of space and place. During this time Lowana has delineated a zone of unmarked actions, allowing for waves of emotion to roll into her life. These actions explore pleasurable sounds, body weight/wait, performative intel; mundane meanderings; driving and getting lost; immersion in panoramas; dancing; thinking; expelling and letting go; mapping time and ephemeral phenomena; trusting herself; and casting a curiosity for natural systems.
The experiments in ‘Actions Unmarked’ reflect a growing awareness of the constantly changing dynamics of the body, the rhythms of creative practice, and an engagment with navigating inner and outer worlds.
Lowana Davies is an emerging artist living and working on the Gold Coast. Her growing body of work examines ideas surrounding feminism, the environment and the politics of performance. Lowana is invested in creating social, cultural and political change through her art practice and works across a number of platforms including contemporary art, dance and circus. Lowana’s practice is inspired by amusing and surprising moments, her immediate environment and performance artists Ana Mendieta, Marina Abramovic, Clark Beaumont, Pina Bausch and AES+F. Lowana has recently been a participant in the Navigate and Level Up grant programs supported by City of Gold Coast and will be performing at the Commonwealth Games Festival 2018.
